GONZÁLEZ BASTÍAS - MAULE VALLEY
José Luis is the latest in a long line of Bastías to farm these alluvial granitic soils on the banks of the RiverMaule, and the first to bottle for a niche market - his father used to sell in flagons for local consumption. In the vineyard he has touched nothing. The vines are as they were when they were planted, and vinification has similarly changed very little for well over 200 years. But he and Daniela – the Bonny to his Clyde - are changing some things to more faithfully represent the vineyard: picking earlier to bring down the naturally higher alcohol levels, and introducing more hygienic practices in the winery, José Luis is also the only grower in his community to bottle commercially.
When José Luís’ great-grandfather was born 120 years ago the PAÍS, MOSCATEL NEGRA, MOSCATEL ROSADA and TORONTEL vines had been there for a long time, probably planted by his grandfather, so José Luis is either fifth or sixth generation. Pre-phylloxera bush vines. No irrigation. Zero input save for a handful of sulphur powder for mildew.
2015 RAMAL - PAÍS / MOSCATEL ROSADA / TORONTEL
The moscatel rosada and torontel were harvested first and left on their skins 10 days before the país (70% of final blend) was added to the ferment. All grapes manually destemmed using zarandas (screens of native bamboo) and they hung out together for about 6 weeks in concrete before being gravity fed into old oak. Bottling in February this year. Only 4 barrels made. A sexy field blend. No fining or filtration, and a little (5ppm) SO2 at bottling.
2015 PAÍS EN TINAJA
The Spanish originally stored wines in tinajas (amphorae). The Bastías still have their original 300 year old vessel, its been housing the same wine every year and José Luis is faithful to tradition. Tinajas is hand destemmed using zarandas, fermented in concrete vats, and aged for around 10 months before bottling (we helped bottle this wine over two hot days this summer). No fining or filtration, and a 5ppm SO2 at bottling.
